Harvesting and Reforestation

Harvesting and Reforestation

MWV strives to maintain well-managed, diverse forest landscapes that provide a sustainable source of wood fiber. To achieve these objectives, we harvest less than three percent of our land annually. MWV's primary harvesting systems are thinning and clearcutting. The harvest system we select depends on management objectives, forest type, forest stand conditions and legal requirements.

Ecosystem-Based Forestry focuses intensive wood production on some lands, while promoting wildlife habitat and biodiversity on other sites -- a system that contributes to sustainable forestry across MWV. By consistently harvesting and regenerating our forests we provide a dynamic range of forest types across the landscape, promoting a wide range of forest habitats, enhancing the health of our forests and enabling them to resist epidemics of insects and disease.

After each harvest we move quickly to reforest the site, either by planting tree seedlings or by promoting natural regeneration. We are committed to reforesting all harvested areas within five years. Our goal is to ensure a plentiful wood supply far into the future, so that the generations to come will be assured the forest values they want and the forest products they need.
