Tack Coat

Tack coat creates a necessary bonding between pavement layers, which is critical in the transference of radial tensile and shear stresses into the entire pavement structure. A lack of bonding between pavement layers may result in slippage and may also cause concentrated stresses that may accelerate fatigue cracking a lead to total pavement failure.

Note: A fog seal often uses the same type of asphalt emulsion as a tack coat; however, the emulsion is diluted and used as a surface application to reduce ravelling and enrich dry or weathered surfaces.
