Natralock was the natural winner for Coast knives and tools with packging that uses up to 90 percent less plastic and 60 percent less packaging weight. Natralock is the ultimate in sustainable security packaging.
CONTEXT
Since 1919, Coast Products has been serious about durability and functionality. After all, the company makes sport knives, multi-tools and LED Lenser lights that need to withstand some of the toughest conditions imaginable. Over the years, Coast also has been serious about its commitment to sustainability. Put the two together and it’s only natural that Coast realized it needed to step away from traditional PVC plastic clamshell product packaging and find a smarter, more sustainable, security packaging solution.
CHALLENGE
At MWV, we’re up for anything. So when Coast asked us to create a package that had the same security assurance of plastic clamshells yet used less plastic and was lighter weight, we jumped at the chance.
SOLUTION
MWV designers and engineers explored a variety of packaging designs, testing them at our Center for Packaging Innovation. In the end, it was clear that our award-winning Natralock security packaging was the right fit. At Natralock’s core is paperboard – a proprietary tear-resistant, recyclable board that can contain up to 30 percent recycled content. The paperboard is combined with an amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (APET) or recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET) thermoform to create a package that’s nearly impossible to tear with your hands, making it a great theft deterrent in stores.
Once you get Natralock home, it’s safe and easy to open. Any household scissors will do. Natralock offers the same level of in-store security as standard plastic clamshell packages. However, it reduces waste. When you make Natralock, you use fewer raw materials and chemicals than clamshells, and you use less energy, too. This is good news for manufacturers and retailers who want to lessen their impact on the environment.
RESULTS
Coast won big with Natralock. The transition from plastic clamshells to Natralock was smooth. Natralock can be sealed on existing machinery, so there’s no hassle or need to buy new equipment. Therefore, Coast was able to implement Natralock immediately on its full 45-SKU line of knives and multi-tools. The company plans to do the same with its LED Lenser lights. Natralock helped Coast reduce packaging weight by up to 60 percent. Plastic use fell by up to 90 percent. Natralock also helped save an average of 55 percent in energy consumption on sealing equipment. And it sealed up to 60 percent faster, boosting production rates and efficiency. All these benefits add up to a win-win-win-win situation for Coast, its partners and consumers alike.
