MeadWestvaco, KapStone Paper Donate 39 Acre Park to Local Municipalities

Public Dedication Ceremony on January 7 at 11 a.m.

NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina (January 6, 2010) — MeadWestvaco Corporation (NYSE: MWV) and KapStone Paper and Packaging Corporation (NYSE: KS) announced jointly today that the 39-plus acres of green park space at the corner of Remount Road and North Rhett Avenue will be donated to the City of North Charleston in a public ceremony on January 7, 2010, at MWV Specialty Chemicals Division Global Headquarters located in North Charleston, South Carolina. The deed transfer ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. The public is invited to attend.

“The park represents a commitment to our neighbors in North Charleston and Hanahan,” Ed Rose, president of MWV Specialty Chemicals Division, said. “The park has been and will continue to be a great place for families in the area.”

The park, to be formally known as MWV-KapStone Park, has been a public green space with recreational facilities since 1949. Residents of the City of North Charleston, the City of Hanahan, as well as other municipalities have enjoyed the park’s baseball diamonds, playgrounds and shelter facilities. The agreement was officially accepted with a vote by the city council of North Charleston on November 24, 2009.

“The willingness of MeadWestvaco and KapStone to provide this gift is proof positive of their good faith to our community,” said North Charleston Mayor R. Keith Summey.  “The City will continue to provide quality recreational opportunities for our citizens to enjoy and will ensure the park maintains its place of prominence as one of our top outdoor facilities.”

Under the terms of the agreement, the 39.374 acres of land will be owned by the City of North Charleston and recreationally shared with the City of Hanahan. The green space is to be used for recreational purposes only; should the land cease to be used as park space, the land will revert to KapStone Paper and Packaging. The deed transfer allows the city to make further improvements to the park and continue to maintain its facilities for generations to come.

“The park is part of the heritage of the North Charleston paper mill and several generations of employees and neighbors. We are pleased to be part of preserving it for recreational uses in the future,” says Bruce Hoffman, Vice President & General Manager, KapStone Charleston Kraft LLC.
