Bio-based polymer coatings like polylactic acid (PLA) are natural plastics derived from plants and can replace fossil-fuel based coatings in many applications. The primary plant-based sources used to derive PLA are renewable and come from dedicated crops that do not impact food or ethanol production.
The addition of PLA to both primary fiber and recycled fiber paperboards in the MWare® line enhances the renewability features of these food service packaging solutions. Unlike traditional polymers, PLA does not originate from fossil fuel sources but is made from renewable resources. PLA is biodegradable and will break down to elements considered safe for the environment.
MWare is Now Certified Compostable
MWare uncoated, bleached paperboards and cupstocks coated with PLA bio-resin have been certified to ASTM 6868 compostability and biodegradability standards by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI). In Europe, we're having these same materials and retail products certified to EN 13432 standards by DIN CERTCO.
